Market Overwatch
Since 2022, Biological Carbon Canada has published an annual overview of Canada’s carbon markets. It started as just a quick overview of Alberta’s regulated market and quickly expanded to the voluntary market.
The documents below provide the Canadian farmer or rancher with a synopsis of our current understanding and assessment of Canada’s carbon markets.
There are two regulated markets in Canada. Alberta has had a fully functioning marketplace since 2007. The Federal backstop market is slow to develop, with the Government of Canada building the protocols and most of the marketplace. Backstop provinces have policy work to do so that their output-based pricing system can accept offsets from agriculture.
The voluntary market continues to develop with protocol developers like Verra and Climate Action Reserve. Some US-based protocols require adjustments for the Canadian context. The voluntary market also experiences a rise in private protocols. The Scope 3 market is expanding as supply chains are now reaching into the farm for carbon data. They are buying data to meet their financial reporting obligations.
You will find below two documents. One is a general overview, and one is unique to grasslands.
